PCT stands for Patent Cooperation Treaty which makes it possible to seek patent protection for an invention simultaneously in each of a large number of countries by filing an international patent application. WIPO stands for World Intellectual Property Organization, which is a specialized agency of the United Nations dedicated to developing a balanced and accessible international intellectual property (IP) system.

This application is designed to assist legal practitioners and trainee patent attorneys in reviewing their legal knowledge through the use of multi-choice questions. It should be noted that providing correct answers to multi-choice questions does not necessarily indicate high grades in professional exams such as the European Qualifying Examination (EQE). The use of this application should not replace self-study or real-life learning experiences, and no part of this application provides legal counsel.

The design and coding of the iOS app, as well as the preparation of the legal questions, were undertaken by Barış ATALAY, an EQE tutor and iOS developer (not engaging in as a profession). Please feel free to contact Barış for feedback regarding legal questions and/or iOS SwiftUI implementation at [email protected].

Each session runs smoothly in terms of showing of the first question and progressing of subsequent questions with an indication of correct or wrong answers shown in different colors. No new test can be initiated without an existing one is terminated while the user is simultaneously allowed to navigate between tabs providing legal texts in relation to the questions. To this end, the questions are randomly generated in each session having a predetermined number of questions and the question counter is not advanced unless a selection has been made. The result page provides a percentage value regarding correct answers.

Overall, for whom is the app useful? It is useful for patent information users in need of gaining understanding of the Patent Cooperation Treaty and the international patent system through use of multi-choice questions. The questions may be indicative of any legal topics one might need more comprehensive study. This app might also prove useful for candidates taking the European Qualifying Examination (EQE) for becoming a European Patent Attorney. It is noted that the EQE is a much more complex exam involving free text input and necessitating interpretation of complex legal situations in the field of patent law.
